Waltzing Witches and Wizards EP

Dance music is one form of the duller background music. In song making, we gave some weigh to the ease of dancing, at the expense of durability and listening experience. In pure listening songs loses their attraction slightly faster than usual.

Melodies for songs / waltzes are based on common pop-rock tones. Modified for old fashioned waltzes.

On the EP Fairy Play belongs to the wide range, 2 octave melodies. Uninvited Witch has rather long keyless part in the middle.

Cast list

Warlocks, Wizards and Witches are spell casters. 

In pictures witch is usually an old ugly woman. But there are also younger, beautiful witches. 

Unlike wizards and warlocks, witches do not carry magical wands. Witch is a potion maker. Her pet is black cat. She has broom with what she and her cat can fly and travel. Broom has often one accommodate, coffee pot.

Witches are sometimes very hostile towards humans. Cannibals, who boil and eat humans.

In pictures warlocks and wizards are old bearded men, with long robe and magical wand.

Warlocks and wizards attitude towards humans varies. Some are good friends, some hates humans.

Goblins and trolls are cousins. Goblins prefer night life from daylight. Trolls are as not sensitive to daylight. Some are, but not all.

Trolls race is much more bigger than Goblins.

Most trolls live in forests. Goblins often dug their homes into underground. To common soft soil. 

In pictures both are usually human-sized or smaller. Looks of the troll and goblin varies an awful lot. Dirty creatures, with rather long messy hair.

Goblins and trolls are usually rather neutral towards humans. Slightly negative.

Big Giants are male dominant race. In pictures they usually look like humans. From giants Gulliver lived on ground, much like all the other giants. In Jake and beanstalk giants lived in clouds.

Giants are not that good friends with humans. Some are.

Dwarfs are short, strong creatures.
Usually they live inside mountains. 
Best known dwarfs are in Snow white fairy tale.
They live in cottage and work in mines.

In pictures dwarf is usually a short human, midget.

Dwarfs are usually neutral towards humans.

Christmas Guy's assistants, Christmas elves, belong to dwarfs. Not as strong, big and wide as common dwarf. Their homes and workshops are in mountain, artic hill.

Fairy is small winged woman, who can fly. Usually young and pretty. Fairy uses clothes. Clothes hide her breasts and genitals. Some fairies can cast spells.

Fairies have usually positive attitude towards humans.

Mermaid is also young, pretty woman. She does not have legs. She has fishtail. Her fishtail begins from the hips. Tail hides genitals. She does not use clothes, her breasts are visible. She lives in the oceans and seas.

Mermaids are usually neutral towards humans.

Most guests in Halloween Mountain's yearly Easter festivals are witches, wizards and warlocks. Broom park is always full of vehicles.

Theme park attracts all kinds of creatures into festivals. From all over the world. According to arrangers, number of visitors doubled with the park.

Production Time notes

EP has 10+1 songs. Numbers in square brackets tells the order in which they were composed and taken to workshop. Finishing order is slightly different. All songs have 3/4 rhythm, Bass drum begins the cycle. Crashes, brushes, etc hits the other two. All songs, except Treats for Trolls, have steady waltzes' 3/4 drum beat in first verse. 

Wedding Call [30/2017, waltz]

Easter 2017 was coming. In the middle of the preparations, a messenger from north came to Halloween Mountain. He told the arrangers that Master Wizard has found himself a beautiful young witch.  The couple would like to keep their weddings in Halloween Mountain, during the Easter Festivals. And so, with a word from the messenger, Festival preparations turned into Wedding Preparations ... yearly Best-witch-of-all award competition changed into a reception and ball at the big arena. A set of additional invitations were sent. Ghost Boys were asked to play in the ball. Guild of Witches to prepare proper food and potions for the guests. Master of the Guild of Warlocks was asked to tie the lovers into holy spellbound.  Elves promised to come, take their bows and create a path of honor for the lovers. On the eve of Easter festivals, only the guests, bride and groom were missing. Arrangers were finally free to sleep in peace.

Early in the morning witches came into the festival area. Then came Elves and Ghost Boys. Master Warlock and assistants came last. Everything was ready for the big day.

Suddenly enormous whizzling noise filled the air. 

Annoyed witch came out from the kitchen, "Would you please be quiet there. We have been listening you ... your off note plays and twists ... all morning !" she shouted to Ghost Boys. 
"We made the final sound check long ago" Boys shouted back.
"They are coming !"  an arranger came, revealed the reason for the noise. "Are you ready ?" he asked.

Witches started to carry cauldrons, food and potions to tables. Boys went to orchestral pit, soon they played fanfares. Informed wandering guests, that the wedding is about begin ...

Wedding call, begins with earlier fanfares. Guests are called in, into their places, seats with strings ... violins. In the second verse Pulsing Pad assists strings. 30 second melody, one minute song was made for making a switch from text to music. Song introduces another basic instrument for EP. Pulsing Pad got new, smoother tuning for EP. 

Wizard Weddings [21/2017, waltz]

Ghost Boys leader went to see the arrangers.

"Wedding waltz. Any requests. What should we play ?" Boys leader asked arranger.
"No requests ... waltz. You have something, what do you recommend ?" arranger answered.
"Okay. Can they dance ?" Boys leader responded "Well I mean"
"Groom is excellent. He is always last to leave the ballroom. Don't know about the bride, suppose she is. Must go and ask" arranger said. She went away.

The arranger came back  "Knew it. She is an excellent dancer too. Why did you ask ?"
"Wedding waltz for poor dancers must be simple and monotonic. Otherwise the lonely couple looks stupid on the floor" Boys leader asked arranger.
"Why ?" arranger asked 
"Poor dancers cannot follow details and rolls of the fine waltz. Looks like that they cannot dance, at all." leader responded.
"Okay. This is not a problem with our couple." arranger said "What is your play" 
"I think that, that, that ...  we play Wizard Weddings for the couple. There is nice built-in musical roller system in the middle. Be sure to inform the couple about the song" Boys leader said.
"I'll do that." arranger said and checked her watch. "Sorry. I must go. Open the doors and lead the guests in." 

After all guest had arrived, it was time for the cocktail. Bride's father gave the bride to the groom, and blessed the marriage. Master Warlock joined the couple into holy spellbound. Finally all guest raised a potion to bride and groom. After formalities were over, the couple, guests and others moved to ballroom.

Bride and Groom went to the middle of dance floor. Guests gathered to the sides. Everything was ready for the less formal part, the fun.

Ghost Boys started to play the wedding waltz. Groom and bride danced the Wizard Wedding all alone on the floor. In the middle of the waltz groom showed his talents. He took a grip from his wife and lifted her into air. He held the rhythm, rolled around and raised his wife higher and higher. Few guests clapped their hands for the amazing rolling lift.

Waltz Warlock [20/2017, waltz]

Waltz Warlock was the second song Ghost Boys played for the guests. Groom danced the song with Brides mother. Bride with Grooms ... rather old ... father. Others were still standing on the sides of the dance floor. Some went to dining room and picked more cocktail to themselves.

In the middle of  the dance Grooms old pa crumbled. He was very near to fall down with bride. People around the floor went quiet. No-one wanted wedding end into witch doctor, quite a many held their breath. All watched the struggle. You could sense the excitement from the air. With brides help old wizard managed to keep the situation in control. After few non-rhythmic steps and twists dance continued. With deep sighs at the sides.

Short 6 cycle long connector between 1st and 2nd verse is rather unique and difficult. Spent many hours with the short sequence. 

- Brightness and Click Organ ( Synth Tuning ) plays the melody. Ghost Box -17 and Pulsing Pad -17 assists.
- Drums play 3/4 all the time. Bass drum begins the cycle, brushes and crashes hit the 2nd and 3rd. Tempo is 180 BPM.
- Pitch range in 1m 7s melody is 1 octave and 5 full notes : D3-A4. In this arrangement it is played twice.

Goblin Gambles [25/2017, waltz]

Goblin was sitting alone in his table. His table companions were waltzing on the floor. Young troll girl came to Goblin.
"Why are you sitting here alone. Why don't you join the others. Have some fun ?" troll girl asked.
"I don't dance. Don't even know how to dance." annoyed Goblin responded
"What a waste of wedding. Could pay a visit to casino. Stronger potions, something to do." Goblin continued and vanished to downstairs.

Uninvited Witch  [26/2017, waltz]

Bride, groom and guests were dancing on the floor. Suddenly an annoyed witch came to ballroom. Anyone could see, that she was not happy.

An arranger ran to witch, and asked, "What's the matter ?"
"I wasn't invited." Witch answered.

Bride and Groom came to see the trouble, the annoyed witch.
"I wasn't invited.", witch repeated herself to the groom, Master Wizard.
"Hardly anyone was."  Master Wizard responded. 
"Everyone who came to yearly celebrations were welcomed to our weddings", bride explained.

"That includes me ?!", annoyed witch suspected.
"You're welcome to our wedding", bride said and smiled to the annoyed, uninvited witch.

Soon after incident annoyed witch accepted the explanation ...  or at least the late invitation ... and joined the others.

Giants greeting  [29/2017, waltz]

Eight giants, four men, four women, were coming to ballroom. They had a big present for the bride and groom. Klanks ! 
"Auch !" the first giant stopped at the door hole "Mind your head" he shouted to others.
"Cannot understand why doorways are so small in here." first giant finished.

From the door giants walked to the couple. 
"May your marriage be, healthy, wealthy and happy." the first giant said, when others gave the present to groom.

"We have prepared a program for you and your guests, would you like to see and hear it" second giant said to bride.
"Of course. Please. Go ahead", bride answered. 

Second giant bowed her head to third. Third giant took note book from his pocket and walked to Ghost Boys. Boys gathered around giant.
Giant gave notes for the new waltz to boys. Boys watched and studied the notes a while, with giant.
Finally boys walked back to their instruments. Giant walked away from the stage.
On his way to floor, he winked to other giants. Asked them to come to floor.

Boys started to play. Giants waltz show began.
Every time giants took the first step, the floor and walls waved a little.

Mermaids' Message  [28/2017, waltz]

"A Spell-gram to you, sire" an arranger interrupted Groom.
"Ah. From whom ?" Groom said.
"Mermaids" arranger responded.
Groom read the message and returned to bride.

"Spell-gram from Mermaids. What did they say ?", bride asked.
"Said that they can't make it. Severe draught had drained channel from sea to Halloween Mountain"  groom answered.
"And that's all ?!", bride continued.
"Oh cause not. They wished us long years with all the best."  groom related the message.
"Let me listen it", bride said and took the spell gram from the groom.
"It's a waltz, shall we dance ?"  groom said. Bride bowed gently. Couple went to dance floor and started to dance.

Decided to use non-standard instruments for Mermaids Message. Leading instrument Piccolo plays the melody at C6 octave. Tried to get some underwater feelings and high tsirping sound-voice into melody. Spooky song is based on nice, smoothly rolling melody. Piano play from the melody is quite a lot different from this song. 

- Flute, Piccolo and Glasses are used for playing Mermaids Message. Ghost Box -17 and Pulsing Pad -17 assists.
- Drums play 3/4 all the time. Bass drum begins the cycle, snare hits the 2nd and 3rd. Tempo is 180 BPM.
- Pitch range in 1m 26s melody is 1 octave and 1 full note. : B2-B3. In this arrangement it is played twice.

It is rather difficult to make LP or EP from waltzes. Waltzes have limited tone / sound palette, limitation comes from the steps. Swaying and sliding belong to waltzing. When you write many at the time, either they start to sound too like each other, or then the latter doesn't sound good.

Treats for Trolls  [27/2017, waltz]

Three trolls were standing in the hallway, which leads to dining room.

"I'm hungry" one troll said.
"Me too." another responded.
"Lets go and see what they got" third continued. And trolls started to walk towards dining room.

In the dining room, there was one witch and empty tables.

"What is this, are you trying to trick us."  first troll shouted to witch.
"Yee. We told in the festival area, that food is plenty." third continued
"We want treats, without tricks" second troll summarized the disappointment.

Witch hurried to the trolls and said "We are changing dishes"

"Dishes !" third troll exclaimed, rather loudly.
"Food and cauldrons, both. Food will be served after 10 minutes." Witch corrected her words.
"We'll be back." third troll said to witch. Trolls went away.

Melody for song has small rhythmic-musical fault, it is hidden with additional drum hits.  Due to fault the first verse misses steady waltz beat. 

Fairy Play [24/2017, waltz]

An arranger came to podium. He waved to Ghost Boys, so that they would stop the play.
 "Ladies and Gentleman, would you be kind and clear the dance floor" arranger takes the microphone. 
Mistress of Fairies Guild joined the arranger .
 "We have prepared a small waltz act for the newly married ... and also to all the others" Fairy Mistress announced.

A group fairies flew to the dance floor.

"Boys may have the Fairy Play waltz, please" Mistress asked from the Ghost Boys.

Boys started to play. Fairies floated and flew all over floor. In the rhythm of the waltz. When in the air, fairies flapped the steps with their wings. With the first they either moved or changed altitude. With the lesser, second and third, they either rolled around or moved. In the air they rolled in all imaginable directions ... in various angles and positions.

Dwarfs on the Floor  [23/2017, waltz]

After Fairies left the arena, a group of Dwarfs came to the floor. They had prepared a Dwarf Dance for the couple and other guests.

In the center of the floor there was cradle, with a small baby dwarf. Dancers danced and rolled around the cradle. Dwarfs were short, strong and heavy. 

"Cute" Witch Wife whispered to her Wizard.
"What ?" Wizard asked.
"The baby in the middle." Bride responded.
"Ou." Wizard said.
"Think that the dance has a message for us." Bride says.
"We should adopt a dwarf !?" Wizard asked.
"Silly. We should make kids of our own." Bride answered.
"Whatever you say, darling." Wizard answered, and kissed his wife gently on her cheek.
The conversation ended. Bride and Groom continued to watch the act.

Grande Finale : Hail Halloween [22 / 2017, waltz]

Night was turning into a morning. Master Wizard came to podium with his wife.
"We would like to thank you all for coming into our wedding" Wizard began.
"You made our wedding worth celebrating. Thank you for that.", Witch-Wife continued.
"Hope you had a good time. Enjoyed yourself. See you around." Wizard said. "At least next year" he continued.
"Same place, same time.", Witch-Wife said.
"But without weddings." Wizard said and smiled to his wife. Wife smiled back. 

"Same place, same time.", Witch-Wife said.
Wizard turned to Boys and said "Boys ?"

Ghost Boys started to play. Guests came to give their farewells and best wishes to Wizard and Witch. 

After last guest had left the ballroom, Boys stopped playing. Packed their instruments and ate some leftovers from the dining room. After they were finished with packing and eating, Boys gave their farewells and best wishes to the couple. Finally they vanished to oblivion with their magical instruments.

Hail Halloween ... Hail Halloween Mountain ... took it's place as Grande Finale without competition. It overshadowed  all the other songs. There wasn't any other places for it.
