Historical review

Roman Catholic church practiced inquisition from 12th century to 18th century. ( 1100s - 1700s ). Goya was born in 1746, he died 1828.  He made lots of paintings from Spanish royals. France captured Spain after revolution, at around 1800. When so, Inez is taken to inquisition at around 1780.  Jewish Inez is unlucky to be one of the last, who was taken to inquisition.

People, who were taken to inquisition, were tortured and rammed without pity and shame. Just like Inez in the movie. All medieval and almost all vintage torturing devices were originally developed and built by Catholic Church. Inquisition and widespread torturing has given medieval times "dark ages" nick name. Inquisition was targeted towards sinners and people, who disobeyed Rome's orders, Rome's demand for donations or were not Catholic Christians.

Catholic Church started to rule Europe and old West Rome areas during 9th century. In 15th century Black Death took power from Rome. During 16th century Rome managed to regain it's power. But during 16th century royals and reformist-protestant movements captured England, Germany  and other European countries from Rome. These losses forced Rome into counter reforms. With the reforms Rome managed to keep France, Spain and Italy. Religious quarrels and counter reforms reduced inquisition, lust of power, greed for money and properties.

In 1797, as part of French revolution, Catholic Church was forced to give up from most of it's properties and gold also in Spain, France and Italy. The earthly power-property system was demolished in 1799. After French revolution and invasion, priests never got back into power, like they do in the movie.

East European countries were Istanbul oriented Orthodox countries. North East Europeans worshipped their old Gods, until Lutherans came and made tailored applications from Christianity to them : All European Lutheran countries have their own religious calendars and celebrations. During 14th century North-East Europeans had a powerful non-religious trade union, Hansa. Hansa had it's HQ in Lybeck, Germany. After Black Death killed Hansa, religion-free trading systems remained or rather recovered after the worst was over.

At the highest Catholic Church owned 40% from West European lands, properties and gold. Catholic movement made a business from afterlife and the place in paradise. It sold and advertised residences in paradise. When you made and-or confessed a sin, you had to pay fines to church, otherwise you couldn't get into afterlife paradise. The well known business was called indulgence trading. During the time it was practiced, it was the major income source for Catholic Church.  The indulgence trading began during 9th century, it ended to Black Death, just like everything else.

After Black Death Rome returned into indulgence businesses. The return resulted into protestant movements, which were against indulgence trading.  Major protestant countries were Germany, Switzerland, Netherlands-Belgium and England. They had their own reformers. None of the movements saw inquisition as the primary fault in Catholic Church. Quite often inquisition is said to have ended to Black Death and renaissance. In the countries, which separated from Rome, inquisition naturally ended to separation.

British king Henry VIII broke up with Rome in 1531, right after Black Death and recovery of Catholic Church. Martin Luther nailed his anecdote to church door in 1517. Anglican ( aka. Episcopal ) and Lutheran movements are the biggest protestant movements. Both were triggered by love. Henry VIII wanted to divorce and remarry. Martin Luther was a monk, who had fallen in love with a nun. Catholic movement forbids marriages and earthly love affairs from the God's servants. After separation from Rome, both king and Luther got married with the woman, they desired.

Few years later, 1522,  Luther made German translation from bible and new testament. Luther's German translation from Bible is the 1st pressed book ever. Pressed or mass-produced book.

Luther denied priests exclusive right to decide, what is right and wrong. He said that the truth is in Bible and New Testament. Besides local translations, Luther needed scripts for spoken languages. Press for printing translated bibles to masses. And also commoners, who can read Bible, New Testament and Lutheran guidance for reading and understanding Biblical texts.

In quite many European country protestant priest or missionary created the script and grammar for spoken language. Before protestants, all European texts were written in Latin. Latin is Roman empire's official language and script.

Term State-In-State is often used from Catholic Churches and Royals divided power-and-rule in West Europe. Vatican, which is independent country, was much more bigger than now. Great deal from Italy belong to Vatican and Catholic Church. Vatican was discontinued in 1799, the current small Vatican state was founded and given to Church later.
