Financial Manger is the name of the female occupied job. When we talk about the Board of Directors ( BOD ) in general level, every vacancy has it's own status and value. The biggest boss is CEO ( Managing Director in Europe ). And the second biggest boss in hierarchy is Financial Manager, right after the CEO. There are some exceptions to this rule. In some companies, the Financial Manager is bigger boss, than the CEO. If company is for example in heavy financial difficulties, and in desperate need of money, the power is almost always transferred to the Financial Manager. Cases where smaller bosses overrun the Financial Manager are very rare. What does she do ? When the CEO is responsible for the sales and production, the Financial Manager is responsible for all the financial and money related things of the company. She pays the wages, bills and taxes. Besides this, she is responsible for the invoicing. She holds the purse, and makes sure, that the company has enough money for the bills and other costs. The billing and book keeping are the most important applications for the companies, therefore IT departments often are and work under FM's control. Women's share of the Financial Mangers has traditionally been over 50 percent. In small and big companies. Hold on Tight "Hold on tight" is very good way to describe the meaning of the existing achievements. Keeping hold of the existing achievements is much more easier than taking over or take control over the new areas. At the moment, there is also a good reason for the phrase. In the recent years, and in big companies, men have conquered the chairs of the Financial Managers from women. Partial reason for this is probably the thing, that women and big medias are not aware about the existence and importance of this "reserved-for-women" vacancy. Historical Background The historical background of the female dominated vacancy is very simple. When a small company is started, a woman is hired to do the office works of the company. She takes care of the bills, wages and other things. When company grows larger, the amount of the paper and billing works increases. The office woman needs help. And more people are hired to handle the financials. When the company grows, the original office woman transforms to the Financial Manager of the company. During the industrial period ( in which we are currently living in ), the story has repeated itself so many times, that nowadays it is not rare, that when a company searches a new Financial Manager, it prefers women from men. The commonness of the Female Financial Managers leads also to a thing, that when the vacancy of the financial manager is open, there are always more than one valid, professional female applicant. Besides the tradition, women's commonness is increased by the thing, that women are usually more honest and takes better care of the company's finances than men. When we talk about financial managers, owners usually prefer women from men. Team work and cost cutting In a typical modern company CEO and Financial Manager work as a team. Financial managers and Financial departments decide very many things in the company. They can use veto to all bigger projects and purchases : A permission from the FM is needed for all bigger purchases. In tight situations FM's are quite autocratic bosses. In practice the owners and the shareholder meetings are the only ones, which can overrun the FM's decisions. If a company, for example, is going to launch a new product, the Financial Manager or her accounting department calculates the costs and gives a budget to the product. When FM informs, that the brand new revolutionary product is too expensive, the great inventor is forced to go back to his drawing desk, with the tail between his legs. The company will never take too expensive products to the production. The similar kind system goes also with the smaller things. A degree from financials is needed, if you want to be a Financial Manager of a big, listed company. In smaller companies you need some sort of financial education. Third bigger boss In quite a many companies there is also a third bigger boss. Especially in manufacturing companies. The vacancy is the head of the R&D. Research and Development department is responsible for the future and the new products. Companies usually keep their heads of the R&D away from the publicity. In most sectors women are rare R&D managers. Men dominate R&D departments also in It-sector. In IT sector there are as many women and men in almost all other vacancies.
